So, so, so good. When Annie originally came out with this book, I did not buy it because another reviewer accused it of being shallow. I had already loved "Let's all be Brave," but if this one wasn't as "deep" I didn't want to waste my money on it. Recently, though, I decided to ignore the review and buy it anyway. I am so glad that I did. This is definitely my favorite book that I have read in a while. Annie has an amazing way of being real and speaking to the hard stuff of life. She uses Scripture (with good interpretation) and the power of story to speak to the problem of suffering. I love how she is so honest about her experiences, especially with seeing a counselor. I think this is terribly needed today. And in regards to the other reviewer who dubbed this book shallow, I can say, it is decidedly not. A book doesn't have to be a discourse on systematic theology to be deep and speak to our lives. And it is also far more enjoyable than the discourses on systematic theology that I have read. ;) Thank you Annie. I have truly fallen in love with you, and have been changed by your writing.

I love Annie’s style of communication. She starts with a story that either provokes me to be like, “Girl, I feel you.” Or has me laughing so hard tears are streaming down my face and then all of a sudden she has connected it to this truth that has me looking around to see who is staring at me because I know that is just for me.Looking for Lovely kind of kicked me in the gut in ways that I needed it over and over again. Annie shared about walking into the brokenness in her own life and oh how I desperately needed someone to stop saying life was beautiful and truly talk about the hard parts.“If you want to be full of hope, you have to suffer a bit.”She shared about overcoming the lies and broken pieces of her life and how the Lord so intimately met her there. This journey is hard and heartbreaking. Both from experience and from walking girls through it, I know that you feel alone, broken, and like giving up, and I love that Annie illuminated both how real and how trying of a journey this is but most importantly how fruitful and life giving it is. (Also, I love how she addressed just how helpful going to counseling can be, as it can be a scary and stigmatized step for many.)“I started to turn toward the whispered lies and look them in the face, giving my soul a voice to stand up for the truth.”But amidst this hard and trying journey of a broken world full of pain and heartache, Annie emphasizes that there are beautiful little reminders of hope. She speaks about the small things that remind her life is good like sushi and friends, and I can attest to these little sprinkles of grace in dark times, like a friend who brings Starbucks to the hospital and just massages your back and doesn’t say a word, a best friend that brings you a birthday present the day your Dad dies in the hospital, or coworkers that throw you a birthday party a week late so you could still be celebrated. (Can I get on my soap box here for just a second and scream to you to never separate yourself from the body of Christ. Can I just tell you from the depths of my soul how desperately you need them when you are in these dark places?)I was listening to a sermon last night as a I was driving into Atlanta, because sometimes I need room to be myself and cry in response to sermons. John Piper talked about how Jesus taught us to rejoice. This wasn’t a rejoicing that was naïve or oblivious to pain and hurt, but this was a rejoicing with tears streaming down his face in pain and fear to the point of death, but He “rejoiced in the hope of the glory of God”. Similarly, Paul is in chains, in prison in a deep hole, truly suffering and writes to the Church how he rejoices for them.And as I have been so thankful and so blessed amidst feeling so much pain I actually feel it in my chest, God has taught me so much about this. We rejoice that somehow, someday this will all make sense, but right now it doesn’t and it hurts and God invites us to feel that and invite Him into it.And I think Annie emphasizes this so well that when we walk into our rainy days and lonely nights and painful thoughts, we somehow walk into allowing hope and love to abound in us in deeper ways that we ever thought possible.“If you aren’t experiencing pain, you aren’t experiencing beauty. Darkness makes us appreciate the beauty of light. If you aren’t allowing yourself to feel the hurt, sadness, loneliness, and disappointment this fallen world has to offer, you probably aren’t feeling the fullness of the joy and beauty the redeemed moments have to offer.”To sum all of this up, I loved this book and amidst reading it bought 3 copies for other people.

I do not typically review books, but WOW this is a must read. Annie has a way of writing that just makes you feel like you are having a good conversation with a friend. This book provides insight and practical ways for you to find the own lovely in your life and challenge you to live out an authentic faith and life. It is the perfect balance of grace and grit to push you in your journey.

Good book for a beginner's study for a group who is very diverse in background and understanding of the Bible. It is NOT a good choice for a group is really wants to study the Bible. There were times the connections made to Scripture were an effort to make a point or align with her personal story. I had a red flag in my Spirit when the author states that the passage doesn't come out and say this, but let's assume this is true.... Pretty basic, unobtrusive topic that may be a good conversation starter for a new group. But, as I said before, this will not stretch you if you know anything beyond basic understanding of Scripture.

Annie's book is a quick and easy read. It's light, descriptive, and very relatable for young, single women. I finished the book, but I was a little disappointed with it. I read it expecting to hear more about how God taught her to "look for the lovely," but it felt more like a bunch of short stories. The short stories are entertaining and enjoyable to read, and I really appreciated her honesty and vulnerability, but I felt like the book was pretty hard to relate to as a mom of 2, and that it lacked the depth I was hoping for when I picked up this book.

Annie speaks into so many struggles I (& I'm sure many other women) have struggled with and am struggling with daily. Through her beautiful writing in Looking for Lovely, my eyes were opened to these struggles. She helped me realize that the lies and negativity we have been confronted with throughout our lives affect the way we see ourselves. We buy into the lies and struggle to see the loveliness already present in our lives.The lovely is there. We just have to trust that God created us and has painted our lives in His lovely image. As Annie writes, "There is a correlation, I'm finding, between beauty and perseverance...Beauty is what makes it possible to keep going. And beauty is in the eye of the beholder, isn't it? It's not just in the things everyone sees, but it is what YOU see, what sticks out to you, the unique moments God gives you to collect up and hold and draw strength from."Get this book! You will soon be overflowing with loveliness collected from the everyday, ordinary moments.

As a Central American immigrant, this book absolutely resonates with me. It is amazing to see how much valuable information and anecdotes Jane shares with us.It’s clear that in third world countries, there are lots of talented and hard working men and women who have limited resources that need our help and support.I enjoyed learning about different options and purchasing power we have as consumers and ways to empower artisans .At the same time, as small business owner, this book makes me rethink the sourcing of my company ‘s products . I have learned that there are more ethical ways to operate and to grow.

I interviewed Jane when she first launched her site and loved reading her back story on To The Market. Her dedication to designing and marketing products for the U.S. consumer while providing honest work for marginalized populations is beyond admirable. She is changing lives and preserving cultural heritage through her work. By sharing her story and the stories of her artisans I think she can help change consumer behavior. We CAN buy the change we want to see. I teach a college course in the Ethics and Sustainability in Global fashion and this book would be a great addition to the course curriculum. K. Webber

This was such a good book, so informative and really made me review my buying choices. I love the author’s focus on how something as simple as the coffee you drink can make another person’s life better - and her anecdotes are both unusual and thoughtful. I've been recently trying to be better about being conscious of what I buy but I was mostly focused around food products when a friend informed me about this book. Jane's new book is a must read for anyone - consumer or business - who wants to learn all the incredible ways we can use our purchasing power to change the world and do good. Jane starts by telling the story how she founded her company, To the Market with that fateful trip to India where she saw firsthand how consumers can use their purchases to impact social change. That trip was the beginning of Jane's journey to founding To the Market, a business that connects consumers and businesses to survivor made goods from all around the world. Jane shows how our purchases of these products not only is a lovely gift for others but also gives back by providing sustainable income, a future and hope to these artisans. Our purchase has a ripple effect of not only helping the artisan with an income, but by impacting entire communities through an increase in education, health, environment and more. Jane also sheds light on the coffee and chocolate industries with ways in which ethical sourcing has improved lives and how our purchases again help small farmers and the planet. This book blew me away and got me so excited to learn and do more.

Jane does an incredible job of bringing the reader along her own personal journey. You will find her describing a detailed scene where she learns how hard it is to sew denim, and a more stark reality about who is sewing denim on the clothes we wear. Her experiences become your experiences and her perspective will become your perspective. I not only enjoy reading these passages for myself, but also immediately obtained a copy for my 15-year old daughter. Her generation needs to be educated on this today as they can truly bring the change we want to see.

Really love Jane's story and the practicality of her message. It can feel so difficult to make a dent with problems that tough our hearts - but every person has the power to make impact with very simple daily decisions. I'll be sharing this book with friends! :)

THREE SHEETS TO THE WIND: 1. An old nautical phrase that referred not to the sails on a ship, but to the ropes that held the sails in place. When all three sheets were not tied down, the sails would flap in the wind and the boat would wobble as it left the harbor. 2. To be inebriated to the point that you wobble when you walk, like a ship without its sheets secured. 3. A book and television show about drinking.   How to Use This Book   There are two types of tourists: the kind that plan their vacation out and the kind that fly by the seat of their pants. If you’re the former, your last overseas vacation probably consisted of zipping about, hitting as many monuments, museums, and scenic overlooks as you could fit into your typed-out itinerary. You probably picked up a guidebook with a foldout map and had a preplanned schedule to make sure you made the most of each day. If you’re the latter, you probably spent a few minutes on the Internet, looking at pretty pictures of where you were going. You probably thought “whatever happens, happens.” Then you realized that all of the hotels were booked, so you fell asleep in the train station, and when you woke up someone handed you a euro because they thought you were homeless—which you essentially were.   This book is exactly what both kinds of travelers need. But instead of focusing on the typical tourist traps, it will tell you how to have a unique experience in whatever country you visit. Instead of statues of dictators, go in search of the elusive Zubrówka, illegal in America but very popular in Poland. Instead of a tour bus to the middle of the spring break area of Mexico, take a Tequila Train to the heart of tequila-making country. In my search for the best places to drink, and the best things in the world to drink, I’ve tasted the finest champagnes and cognacs in their respective regions in France and learned from master vintners about how they are made. I’ve knocked back 100-proof kaoliang infused with snake blood in Taipei and I’ve sipped Scotch that will set you back a cool ten thousand dollars a bottle in Scotland. I’ve tried a dozen varieties of vodka in Poland, visited a bar in Belgium that serves more than two thousand beers, and traced the path of the Malbec grape from France to Argentina. I met some really incredible people along the way. I learned some fascinating things about the world—and the way the world drinks. And now you can share in the reward of all of my “hard work.”   Spend a hundred dollars on a bus tour and you’ll see the land and learn about its history. Spend a hundred in a pub buying a few rounds and you’ll learn about the people who made the land and who live the history.   Sure, statues and monuments that pay homage to a country’s wars, plagues, and famines say a lot about the people who live there. And you can often find a fine adventure if you just aimlessly bumble about and hope for the best. But the best way to learn about the people who live in a particular place is not by observing their history, or learning about the people who died off years ago, but by talking with the people who live there now. And in my experience, nothing works better as a social lubricant and as a way to get people to open up than buying a round. You’ll get some great advice about where the locals eat and drink, will probably get invited to hang out with them again, and will most likely make some friends for life. Not bad for the price of a drink.   The Book   This isn’t a traditional guidebook. This book will paint a picture of what drinking in a country or region is like and hopefully inspire you to journey to some of the amazing places that I’ve had the privilege to visit. I’ll speak of specific locations and customs, but don’t expect to see any detailed maps, hotel recommendations, or tips on how to get around town. There are other books out there for that. What I can promise is to give you some really good reasons to go to some really cool places and to have a few libations while you’re there.   I’ll even buy you one myself: On a trip to Scotland, I was made a member of the Craigellachi Whisky Club at the Quaich Bar in the Craigellachi Hotel of Speyside. I keep a bottle of Glenfiddich 18 in the case. If you stop by the bar, mention that you’re a friend of mine and help yourself to a nip from my bottle.   Why do I get to spend so much time wearing down my passport and get paid for something that everyone else would pay to do? For the past few years, I have hosted a television show, Three Sheets, which has sent me to locations across the globe to engage in foreign drinking customs and befriend the people who partake in them. My “job” has taken me to more than fifty countries, where I have visited countless watering holes, drunk innumerable libations, and had my share of debilitating hangovers. I’ve traveled around the world, drinking … so you don’t have to. The most common question I’m asked is “What’s your favorite drink?” My response is “Usually, the drink that I’m drinking.” When you’re enjoying someone’s drink of choice, in the place where it was developed, with the people who revere it, it’s difficult to desire anything else at that moment. When someone is so passionate about a beverage, it’s difficult to not be affected.   I have one of the best jobs in the world, not only because I am gainfully employed doing something that most people consider a leisure-time activity, but also because when I do it, I get a truly authentic experience from the countries that I visit.   Cast of Characters   Steve McKenna   Throughout this book and while shooting Three Sheets, I often make references to my buddy Steve McKenna. He’s one of my closest friends and one of the nicest guys you’d ever meet. However, when Steve drinks, he gets a little nutty. When he hits his threshold of drinks, he becomes a gremlin. It’s not unlike Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, although Steve doesn’t hold any postgraduate degrees, so he’s more like Mr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. His Mr. Jekyll is a guy who would wake up at 5 A.M. to drive you to the airport, would help you move, and would return your car washed and full of gas if he were to borrow it. His Mr. Hyde would drink until 5 A.M., move you to tears, and throw up in your car after having very bad gas in it. His name, completely my doing, has become synonymous with high levels of intoxication. You’re buzzed if you get the courage to talk to someone that you wouldn’t talk to when you’re sober. You’re drunk if you try to kiss someone that you wouldn’t talk to when you’re sober. And you’re “Steve McKenna’d” if you lick the face of someone you wouldn’t talk to sober. There are several Steve McKenna references in this book. Now you’ll know who and what I’m referring to …   Pleepleus   Pleepleus is the name of the stuffed toy monkey that I bring along with me on my travels. He’s been with me in every episode, except for when I left him in a beer bath in the Czech Republic, or when I forgot him completely in Jamaica and Costa Rica. He was originally hidden in the show, as part of the drinking game that people play when they watch Three Sheets on TV, but now Pleepleus occasionally upstages me.   Jim-the-Cop   Jim-the-Cop is another buddy of mine. He was a cop on Long Island, New York, until he got injured on the job and had to retire (it was a back injury, nothing cool like being shot in the leg). So he found ample time to tag along with me for a couple of episodes. The first time he joined me was in Puerto Rico. I challenged him and the owner of Nono’s to a chugging contest, to see who could down a glass of beer the fastest. I came in first, and Jim came in last. A few months later we were in New York City shooting an episode at Lederhosen, a great German bar in Greenwich Village. I wanted to give Jim a chance to vindicate himself, so I organized another chugging contest. What was only revealed later was that Jim was advised by his brother to “spill a little beer down his shirt” so he could empty the glass more quickly. Not only did he lose, but he ended up with a spill down his shirt. That day a new expression was born. Now, whenever someone spills a drink, it’s said that they “Jim-the-Cop’d.”   Drink!   While shooting the first episode of Three Sheets, I thought it would make sense to also make the show a drinking game. A lot of other shows have become drinking games after the fact, such as M*A*S*H and Cheers. You gotta drink when Klinger shows up in women’s clothing or when Cliff Claven gives a “little-known fact.” But those games were created after the shows were made, and didn’t always work. I wanted to create a game so people watching could drink along with me. Why just watch a party on TV when you can party along? The game became a big hit.   Think of the book as an international pub crawl. You don’t have to buy a round-the-world ticket and tackle each chapter while you’re physically in the region we’re discussing. But if you have the means to, I highly recommend it. The alternative way to read this book is to drink along. Three Sheets was the first television show to be deliberately made as a drinking game. So why shouldn’t Three Sheets the book follow suit? Not drinking along would be like reading about some great art in a book with no pictures. That’s crazy talk! So, the rules for the drinking game, if you care to partake, are as follows: Whenever you read the words drink, drank, or drunk, take a sip. Therefore, if you’re playing along, you just took three. Whenever I talk about Steve McKenna, you have to say “Oh, boy …” out loud and take a sip. And whenever you see Pleepleus hiding on a page, tap him on the head and take a sip! Try not to get Steve McKenna’d and be careful not to Jim-the-Cop!

If you have ever watched Three Sheets then you have to read this book! The book covers about the same as the episodes but also goes into a little more detail but, in the same fun Zane way. I spent most my time smiling and laughing while reading this book. This truly is a must read for fans of the show, traveling, and fans of liquor. I enjoy reading and this book will be on my top shelf. I have a friend who doesn't drink and thought this book sounded dumb but after seeing me laugh and reading some passages from the book he is also going to read it. Awesome book awesome show if Z Lamprey writes another book I will have to read it as well because this one was so enjoyable. Slà inte - Cheers!

If you enjoyed the show you'll definitelly enjoy this book. It brings details on the most interesting trips the author had while hosting Three Sheets, plus funny anecdotes, facts and a little more in-depth knowledge about the beverages presented in the show. I specially enjoyed some recipes for drinks as also the writing style that has the same amusing tone from the show. If you enjoy travelling and tasting new drinks as I do, it's a very good reading.Ps. Zane, if you ever come again to Brazil, there's a lot better and more interesting places to drink than those you visited in Rio.

It's a very good book. I was worried that it would be a carbon copy of his shows and what he did in them. There are some of the same things in both but there is also some things that were not in the show that made the book. If you have not seen his shows you will still completely understand the book; and if you have seen the shows this book will still be funny and entertaining.

Great Book and Huge Zane Fan!

If you enjoy Zane's Drinking Made Easy show, then you will also enjoy the book. It's a fun, easy read. I bought it for my husband for Christmas and winded up reading it myself. We both enjoyed it!

Fun book to read. You can practically hear Zane's voice in your head. Too bad the paper is a little cheap feeling, since this is a great book.

Very easy read. Entertaining. If u enjoy the show you will like the book. Also has many great drink recipies.

This little travel book is packed with the most important information you'll need on a visit to the Greek Islands. My wife and I referred to it constantly on both Santorini and Mykonos, and, especially since we had only three days to see both islands, it really enhanced our experience. We even got our own photo in Oia on Santorini, very much like the cover photo. Small and light enough to be easily carried in a purse or a very light, over-the-shoulder travel bag, this valuable little book is one of the renowned Eyewitness "Top 10" travel guide series. Wherever we travel, we're not without our terrific Eyewitness guides.

This gives some useful info with decent maps for the Greek islands. It is more of an advertisement rather than a good travel book. It lists various aspects of the islands in separate top 10 lists rather than covering each island separately.

It did not contain very much on the history of the islands, but only on restaurants and hotels, and a few tourist spots.

Very nice book about Greek Islands. We are planning a trip in September and this has great maps, photos and details to plan easily.

We always loved printed Eyewitness guides for their nice illustrations and design. The kindle version, however, looks very plain, almost bare text.

Great book

Trivial book. It was not organized in a way that would be helpful, given that we weren't going to hop from one island to another just in order to get the best dinner or the best sightseeing or best shopping. The guide would not have helped to plan a trip, and it was definitely not helpful to take on a cruise, as we did with it, whose itinerary would stop at a couple of the Greek islands.

I was thrilled to buy this book for an upcoming cruise. I used the daily deal and ordered several without using the "look inside" feature. I've used DK printed books for years. This edition is not the same as the book. There are significantly fewer photographs, maps, figures. I enjoy browsing the photographs to decide where to focus my attentions. You can't do that with this book. I think that it is misleading of the publisher/Amazon to use the same cover on both the print edition and the Kindle edition. I also think that the text description of the Kindle edition should clearly note that the printed book is not the same as this edition. Amazon will refund my money, which I appreciate.

not what I expected but is interesting

Having The Masters all in one small book.... how great is that.. !!!

This is a really interesting book about the Masters of Wisdom, who guide Humanity in accordance with the Divine Plan. It begins from the cosmic perspective, describing the role and purpose of the Hierarchy and how the energies of the Seven Rays work through them. The author gives the topic a philosophical context by dealing with such questions as karma and free will. And why all of the Masters discussed here are male! There are descriptions of the Masters themselves as they have lived on the Earth over a number of incarnations. These chapters are interesting and easy to read, enlivened by description and anecdote. The book also contains very useful appendices on Astrology and on the Seven Rays; as well as a helpful glossary.

Phillip Lindsay has written a very useful book on the Masters of Wisdom and the role they play in world affairs (with photos included). Appendices include Seven Ray Tabulations, Astrology and the Seven Rays, and a great Glossary. This is essential reading for anyone wanting to know more about the Masters - the great ones who guide and guard humanity.
