Gary Larrson creator of the phenomenally successful cartoon, The Far Side®, grew up in Tacoma, Washington. As a kid he liked to draw but never formally studied art or considered being a cartoonist. Gary Larson has always been one of my favorite cartoonists. I was sorry when he discontinued his "Far Side" cartoons a few years ago, but it turns out he hasn't been loafing. He's created this delightful book -- a wise and laugh-filled perspective on an underappreciated critter, and an addition to ecological wisdom that's a joy to read. Give yourself a treat -- buy this book!

Good book, but be aware it's not for your first grade kids. The "I kicked thumper's ass" t-shirt and the page about flowers being sex maniacs are good examples of this.

mood? Learning with satire. I use this to introduce Ecology, at the University level. I wish Gary did more Biology/Science topics. A textbook would be to die for. I bought 10 total, as a barrow able class set. I added them to the 6 I already have.

First, I'm a big Far Side fan. I didn't know this book existed until I was "googling" Gary Larson to see if he ever returned to his profession and read about this book. I ordered it immediately. . I giggled and giggled at the cartoons (don't miss the tiny ones in the corners) and the text. I'm not surprised that teachers are using this; very educational but also humor that should appeal to many age levels. The humor is a little dark at the end ...should I have been surprised!?:)...and I wasn't quite sure about giving to an 11 year old who might find it a bit dark...but I'm going for it! Maybe a new generation to share my old Far Side books with:)?

I know this is marketed as a "young adult" book, and certainly my 7th-grade daughter loved it. I have to say, though, that I was laughing out loud on most pages! The story format allows Larson to develop a much deeper and more subtle level of humor than in a single-panel Far Side cartoon. Throughout it all, Larson delivers a valuable lesson in forest ecology, showing how much of what we romaticize or demonize about forest animals is wrong.Despite the appearance, this is not a children's book. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone under 10, and even then it depends on the kid. There's some language that'll go over the head of many kids. Also, there's a lot of death, both animal and human. (While I thought the bear bringing tartar sauce to where his compatriots had felled a fisherman was funny, some kids might be upset. Heck, some kids might be upset by the remains of the picnicking bugs that the dragonflies ate.)This is a relatively short book, but it's worth taking time to thoroughly look at each picture. Many of them contain a lot of visual gags that are easy to miss if you whip through too quickly. An adult can still do a thorough perusal of the book in under an hour, but it'll be a mightily entertaining hour.

I have all of Gary Larson's comics / books now.As a fan of Gary Larson, I was pleased to discover something else by him.

Such a funny story. Any Gary Larson fan will easily​ the twists in the story and the ending. Excellent illustrations.Not a book for young children because you may end up trying to explain some of Larson's weirdness.

Funny and educational! I read it with my 9yo and she thought it was pretty funny. I initially got it for my 7yo nephew but I thought it would be too difficult for a 7yo to read, although if someone read it to him, he could probably understand it.Its a good lesson in ecology and care of the environment.
