As a crossword puzzle addict and a one-time student of Latin, I was looking forward to this book.To start with the good points: (1)It is set up so that the solver can choose from a Latin word list or cover the list and work entirely from memory. (2)The vocabulary begins with very easy and adds more difficult words a few at a time. (3)The paperback edition is printed in ink that allows the the solver who uses pencil to consult the attached word list the first time through and then erase the answers (without erasing the diagram and numbers) and come back later to use only memory.The first fault is that most deadly of crossword sins: In several instances the clue for a given number is omitted. This leaves the solver with no other recourse than to look up the answer and hope it is used again with its definition included.A second fault leaves this reader puzzled. (Pun not intended) In several places words are spelled with a "ch" for the hard sound of "c". For example, the first puzzle is entitled "Prima Charta" (First Map) rather than "Prima Carta" as I would expect. Since Latin was used for several thousand years, it is possible that the spelling is correct for some era, but I have never encountered it in four years of high school Latin and a great many years of choral singing. I hope some scholar of Latin will read this far and take the trouble to enlighten me.These faults may dim a solver's enjoyment, but the book can still lead the reader to be 'Semper Felix' (always happy).
Nauta is Sailor, not ship. Amica/amicus can both mean friend but there's no indication in the clue. The former error makes me very annoyed. The latter, while sloppy, isn't a huge issue. All in all, it's a mediocre product. The writers should have done more.
Just keep in mind that this book is titled "Easy" Latin Crossword Puzzles. It is appropriate for those just beginning their Latin studies and not those who are beyond Latin 1. This was a nice gift for my daughter who is only a few months into her high school Latin studies and needed something to make it a little more interesting. It might also be appropriate for people who know some Latin but have never formally studied the language or for those just interested in learning a little more about Latin. Crossword puzzles are a fun learning method. I wouldn't recommend this book for college students who would likely be disappointed.
It's so nice to find a supplement that really is easy and can be used by fairly novice Latin students - especially one that is so reasonably priced!!! 50 Crossword puzzles are offered in this volume (with a mix of Latin to English and English to Latin translations) with a list of possible words to choose from at the bottom of each page. (This feature is nice both because it makes it easier for beginning students to choose from a limited vocabulary and because it eliminates confusion about which ending should be used to fit precisely in the crossword.)This is a fun and easy way to practice vocabulary and have a little variety in your Latin studies.
Thin booklet, but still worth buying. Person who received it is in her 3rd year of Latin and really likes it, partially for the review on easier words and partially for needing to look up unfamiliar words.
For all fans of classical Latin and puzzles (both often found together), this is the game! I sure hope there are more in the series because this is moving fast. I've taught (Psychology and English Comp and Lit. at University) and if anyone out there wants to do the same, this is the teaching game. It may not be as easy as The New York Times but not all those readers can read latin. Divertiti, Enjoy!
