WOW WOW WOW I love it I passed the test the fist time. I hadn't taken a counseling class in ten years. But I also sacrificed and STUDIED I started reading about six months in advance then six months before the test I listened to the CDs every day. (in the morning, in the gym, at work) I highly recommend this.
At the time of this review, this is the most updated version of this book...Which is sad because it was last revised in 2009. Do yourself a favor and make sure you are buying the most updated version as Amazon is also selling the older version that looks identical. This book will make you feel smart. It is entirely made up of practice questions. Most of the questions are written in a manner that if you have ANY common sense whatsoever you'll be able to figure out the answer. I found myself correcting things in this book. For example, there's racist questions that I guess must have been ok at some point, and there's spelling and grammar errors. I hate lazy editing. Why did I spend a hundred and something dollars on this only to be editing it myself??? That being said, this book appears to be the gold standard for studying for the NCE. Everyone uses it. I studied this book for about a month before I took the exam. Anything I wasn't familiar with, I made into flash cards and studied those. I didn't really need to. The questions on my test were vague and almost nothing like the questions in this book. A passing score on my state NCE is 88 OUT OF 160!! I scored well above an 88, but basically could have failed it and still passed in the state's eyes, so yeah, you don't need to study THAT hard. It's a shame there isn't more competition in study guides. Someone could make a killing...
Bought this to study for my NCE. I have not taken it yet, but the information and format are amazing and very helpful. However, as time goes on, the version I purchased will become more and more outdated, sadly.
This was incredibly helpful in preparing for my NCC exam back when I purchased it. I would highly recommend it. I like going back to it just for times of review.
Great for studying. The disk set is amazing. I listen to it in the car everyday and I am gaining information without even knowing it. My test is a year away but starting early but listening to the CDs is making me feel so much better about it.
I already knew that The Encyclopedia of Counseling is a great study guide. It has great questions plus the answers come with teaching information about that answer or some of the other choices so you know why those are not correct. When ordering my own copy from Amazon, I found that they offered a package that also contains a complete set of teaching CDs and the Human Services Dictionary which contains people, terms, theories, and other information. These were bundled together for a price less than buying each alone. I find the information very helpful in preparing for the NCE in that it gives me both visual and auditory in studying the information.
Though the DSM information is outdate, overall this resource was critical to my passing the NCE. I recommend it.
Used this book and the cd to pass the National Counselor Exam! They were very helpful!
