I have been into fitness all my life and probably have tried just about every type of exercise routine being taught today. I am always on the lookout for exercise systems I have not yet tried. I saw this one (the 12-Minute Total Body Workout by Joyce L. Vedral, Published in 1989) on Amazon for a bargain price and decided to purchase it.Just for the record, I have tried various types of military fitness programs (The Army Green Beret 12-minute workout system, The U.S. Navy SEALS fitness programs), and numerous other total fitness routines. One of the interesting aspects of this program is that the majority of exercises you only need a three pound dumbbell set and is designed to give you a good workout in a short period of time. It also shows the 12-minute exercises you need to do each day of the week.The areas covered in this large format soft cover book includes the following: Why the program works, the mind, the mood and the movement, a pair of three-pound dumbbells is all you need, the 12-minute Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday workouts. There is also a chapter on how to burn off more calories, making friends with foot and using this exercise program on the road. This book also covers aerobic exercises to maintain and improve your cardiovascular system.This text is filled with clear black and white photographs showing the exercise routines along with detailed instructions on each page. In conclusion, if you are a person who wants to stay fit but is limited on your time, you may want to check out this simple and easy to follow routine. I have another great Joyce Vedral book, "Bottoms Up" that I was finally going to get serious and follow for 3 months when I read her reference to this workout book and decided to give it a try first to see if this concept would really work. So far I've been doing this for 6 weeks and enjoying the brevity of it. I wasn't in horrible condition, so I'm going to wait until the end of the 3 months to comment on final results. It's basically built on the concept of isometrics and it does take a while to concentrate and get the hang of the muscle tension concept, but you cannot argue with her personal results

I like the advice, tone, and simplicity of Joyce Vedral's book. I have returned to this book many times over the last 20 years or so and it works! I don't like the binding, though, as it doesn't lay flat. Yesterday, I took my old, tattered copy to a printer and, for $3.00, they spiral-bound it for me! Thank you, Joyce Vedral, for a simple, easy program to follow, using only two weights, weighing three pounds each, and food suggestions!

This is my third time buying this book....I have it in three locations....The exercise time is short enough that I don't mindtaking the time:)

If so, this is for you. Joyce Vedral is a very accomplished writer and also experienced in weight training (she is an English professor at Pace University) So she can write, and she knows about her subject.Faced with a physique that tended to put on weight, Vedral took up weight training, fell in love with it, and has written quite a few books on the subject. Here she has done an excellent job of figuring out a weight program that can be done anywhere, by nearly anyone, with simple equipment, no gym and just a bit of time.While this won't whittle your abs down to a washboard or create monster pecs, this workout will keep you fit when you are on the go. If you are stuck in hotel rooms with no fitness centers (most of the world) or at home with kids (rest of the world) you can do this with a simple set of dumbells and a chair and telephone book. (You can even get water-fillable, collapsible dumbells to take up no weight in your suitcase.)The routine does work the entire body and while not as good as a full workout in the gym with free weights, treadmill and Nautilus, and won't bulk you up, it is a good fitness routine to keep you ever in shape, in a minimum of time. It is NOT easy (you will be pleasantly tired afterwards) but it is effective.

Excellent for those who think they don't have time. Gives very good results too. A little goes a long way. Keeps it simple.

Joyce Vedral gives an awesome alternative for working out to those of us who either don't have time or simple don't like lengthy workouts: isometric exercise and dynamic tension, in other words, using your body's own strength to reshape itself. I like how she addresses occasional boredom in workout by saying, "So what? Forget about keeping yourself amused and remember your goal. Bite the bullet, you'll be glad you did." The exercises are effective, easy and just make you feel good afterward. Also included is good info on how different foods function for the good (or bad) in your body and how to choose the best options at mealtimes. Even though the book is from 1989, the principles still apply and the plan really works. This is my second purchase of this book. My daughter "borrowed" my first!

Excellent clear program, totally do-able and encouraging. Have used this program several times over a period of years and keep coming back to it after lapses because it gets a lot done in a small amount of time.
